How Does JUVÉDERM® Work?

Our skin is unique, and, as such, each of us requires individualized treatment options for our cosmetic needs. JUVÉDERM® for lips is a gel formula injected directly into the lips and the skin surrounding the lips using an ultra-fine needle, providing a natural-looking, plump effect to the lips while smoothing and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the skin surrounding the lips. This non-invasive, nonsurgical treatment produces visible improvements to the mouth’s and lip’s appearance using the power of a concentrated formula of modified hyaluronic acid.

As with other hyaluronic acid fillers or HA fillers, VOLBELLA® uses patented VYCROSS® technology to ensure a smooth and consistent gel application. The “XC” in JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC refers to lidocaine, a numbing agent, which briefly desensitizes the treated areas to reduce any discomfort or pain. VYCROSS® holds the hyaluronic acid molecules in an ultra-fine gel, keeping it intact within the skin for longer than other lip filler products and injectables. This provides patients with results for up to a year, allowing the hyaluronic acid to fill fine lines and wrinkles while acting cohesively with the skin, producing minimal swelling and a shorter overall recovery time.

Do Lip Fillers Hurt?

During their procedure, patients may experience some minor discomfort during and after each injection, though this is rare due to the combined use of topical anesthetic cream and the numbing agent, lidocaine, which is mixed into the filler to reduce injection site pain. In general, most patients experience minimal-to-no discomfort during injections with JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC.

How Long Do Lip Fillers Last?

Results following VOLBELLA™ XC are temporary yet long-lasting. Results appear right away, improving over time and typically enduring for up to one year after injection, with optimal treatment. Over time natural lip fillers become broken down and absorbed by the body over time.

Once patients begin to notice the effects of their treatment wearing off, or sooner, they may schedule additional follow-up injection appointments to maintain optimal corrections. With regular touch-up injections, less material is generally needed to maintain the results of the filler. How Many JUVÉDERM® Treatments Will I Need?

Injections with JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC last for six months to one year, with optimal treatment. Although the correction is temporary, it is immediately visible and long-lasting. The injected formula is naturally broken down and absorbed by the body. Repeat injections are usually needed to maintain optimal correction.

In general, only one treatment is needed to achieve optimal results, though this can vary from patient to patient due to factors unique to each person. Potential Side Effects Of Lip Fillers

Your provider will review your full medical history to determine potential contraindications to the recommended treatment. You may not be eligible for treatment with JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC if you have severe allergies marked by a history of anaphylaxis, a history or presence of multiple severe allergies, or a history of allergies to lidocaine or Gram-positive bacterial proteins. You should notify your provider if you have a history of cold sores prior to your treatment day.

In general, potential side effects are rare and are mild or moderate, with a short duration. The most common side effects include temporary reactions at the treatment site, such as tenderness, swelling, firmness, lumps/bumps, bruising, pain, redness, discoloration, and itching. Side effects generally last for 30 days or less.

How To Prepare For Your Appointment

Prior to your appointment, you will be provided with specific instructions regarding how to prepare for treatment with JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC. Prior to the appointment, patients must remove all makeup, or the provider will help remove it. Once the makeup is removed, the skin is then prepared with a topical antiseptic medication to prevent the introduction of bacteria into the skin during the injections.

The treatment itself is generally brief and depending on the areas to be addressed and the number of syringes of product used, the injections may take 15–30 minutes or more. The total treatment time can vary depending on the number of injections and the artistic complexity involved. JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA™ XC Aftercare

As with pre-treatment instructions, patients will also be provided with lip fillers aftercare instructions, which will include information regarding what to expect following their procedure and how to best care for their skin and their treated area(s) in the days following their treatment. After cosmetic injections, patients may notice minor swelling or bruises at the injection site(s). These side effects usually dissipate within about one week after treatment.

Your provider may recommend that you avoid strenuous exercise, exposure to direct sunlight, heat exposure, saunas and hot tubs, and alcoholic beverages for at least 24 hours after their treatment. Patients should avoid rubbing or putting physical pressure on the treated areas following treatment and consult their physician about resuming any regular medications.
