What Is Laser Hair Removal?

A highly popular, non-invasive method of treating and, eventually, reducing unwanted hair on the body and face, laser hair removal provides long-term, permanent hair reduction with minimal pain and discomfort. Our state-of-the-art laser system works both gently and quickly to remove unwanted hair from multiple body areas. With minimal discomfort, laser hair removal gives you the option to rid yourself of the pain, boring routine, and expense of traditional hair removal practices such as shaving and waxing.

Laser treatment for removing unwanted hair is highly versatile in its uses, as laser treatment may be done just about anywhere on the face and body, with certain exceptions. Laser hair removal is most effective when patients have both fair skin and dark hair, but it is safe to use with any skin color and skin tone.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated light beam (laser) to target pigmented hairs in their active phase of growth and uses light energy to damage hair-producing cells. During laser treatment, a laser emits a light that’s absorbed the melanin (pigment) in the hair. As light energy converts to heat, the tube-shapes sacs within the hair-producing follicles sustain damage. This damage inhibits or delays new hair growth. Although laser removal effectively delays or inhibits hair growth for long periods of time, in most cases, multiple sessions are required for the maintenance of desired results.

The length of each session depends on the area being treated and treatments can range from 15 minutes for the bikini area to an hour and a half-hour for full legs/back. We carry the Cynosure Elite IQ Laser®. It has two wavelengths, so we can safely treat all skin types.

Laser Hair Removal Treatment Areas

When deciding if laser hair removal is right for you, consider the intended treatment area. Laser treatment for hair removal is excellent for large areas of skin, such as the underarms, legs, arms, and back. This does not, however, rule out its effectiveness at removing hair from smaller areas, such as the upper lips, chin, or bikini area. Whether you want to get rid of hair on your face, back, legs, or virtually anywhere else on your body — except the eyebrows —  we can help you achieve smooth, hair-free results.

The most common treatment areas for laser removal include the following.

  • Abdomen
  • Areola
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Bikini Line
  • Cheeks
  • Chest
  • Chin
  • Ears
  • Feet & Toes
  • Legs
  • Navel
  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Sides Of Face
  • Underarms
  • Upper & Lower Lip

Am I A Good Candidate For Laser Hair Removal?

Patients with dark hair and light skin are ideal candidates for laser hair removal, as this combination allows the laser to effectively target its light on the pigment within the hair without having pigment in the skin competing for it. The contrast between light skin and dark hair allows the melanin to be easily targeted. However, innovations in laser dermatology make it possible to target lower contrast hair-to-skin-tone types. The Fitzpatrick skin-type chart is often used when evaluating hair and skin types for laser hair removal procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, laser hair removal is safe when it is performed by an experienced dermatologist such as those with Gainesville Dermatology Aesthetic Center. In order to ensure maximum safety for our patients, individuals who are pregnant; those with a sunburn or active rash, and those who either currently take Accutane or have previously taken Accutane in the past 6 months cannot have laser hair removal.

There may be some mild discomfort when the laser is activated. However, it generally fades soon after. Some say it feels similar to a rubber band snap, but this is patient pain-level-dependent. We use a cool air wand that blows cold air during the time of laser use to lessen any discomfort.

For some patients, the treated area may become red and show some swelling around each follicle, “razor bump” like reaction. This typically disappears within 24–72 hours following a session. The risk of side effects varies with skin type, hair color, treatment plan, and adherence to pre-treatment and post-treatment guidelines for laser hair removal. Depending on the area being treated, it can take anywhere from 5-10 treatments to achieve the desired long-term results. Areas of coarse, darker hair, such as the lower legs, bikini line and underarms typically have the best results with the fewest treatments. The face and the arms sometimes require more sessions than other areas. However, it’s important to note that the number of laser hair removal treatments is different from client to client depending on their individual characteristics and desired results following treatment. Schedule an appointment with our Laser Hair Technician for more information about treatment requirements.

Laser treatment for face and body hair uses focused light energy to damage individual hair follicles under the skin, but not all hair is at the same point in the growth cycle. As such, certain hairs won’t sustain damage during treatment and will continue to grow. In order to ensure all follicles in the treatment area are successfully damaged, patients typically require a series of laser treatments that target individual hairs during their growth cycles. After four to six treatments, patients can expect a marked reduction in hair growth. In order to maintain the desired results, we recommend scheduling touch-up sessions every 6 months to a year.
